What are encysted inhibited and encysted mucosal small redworms?
Encysted small redworms are larvae and immature adult redworm that burrow into the wall of the horse's intestine and 'hibernate' there over the winter months, whilst they mature. Here, they are not detected by the horse's immune system, so can grow undisturbed until the warmer spring weather arrives. It is important to treat for this stage of the small redworm because mass emergence of the encysted mucosal small redworm in spring can cause parasitic diarrhoea, mild recurring colic, listlessness, weakness and appetite and weight loss.

How to administer Equine Guard
For the treatment and control of encysted small redworm administer 5ml of the product per 65kg bodyweight daily for five days. This product can easily be administered by mixing with grain or concentrate feed, however the full daily dose must be administered in one feed. Pregnant mares and foals may also be safely treated with fenbendazole at therapeutic doses.

Every horse alive will have a small population of parasitic worms in its body, which cause the horse no ill-effects whatsoever; in fact, a small worm burden is an excellent ‘booster’ to a horse’s immune system and its ability to fight infection. However some horses develop heavy worm burdens which, if left untreated, can prove fatal. Domestication and the subsequent management of horses has increased the likelihood of heavy worm burdens developing, so it is vital that we, as horse owners, do all we can to keep our equine friends parasite free. Equine parasite control can be very confusing if you are unsure of which parasite you need to treat for, so we have put together some vital information to help you understand the goings on in your horse’s gut and how best to keep it under control....
