What is Equitape?

Equitape is a white paste containing 90mg/g praziquantel for the control and treatment of infections with cestodes (tapeworms) of the species Anoplocephala perfoliata.

When should Equitape be used?

Equitape should be used alongside your usual worming programme, in spring and autumn, to control tapeworm infections. It can also be used at any time of the year to treat a known tapeworm infestation.

How much Equitape does my horse need?

One 6.67g syringe contains sufficient paste to treat one 600kg horse at the recommended dose rate. If your horse weighs less than this, simply set the syringe to the correct graduation (each graduation on the calibrated syringe delivers sufficient paste to treat 50kg bodyweight) and administer this amount only. If your horse weighs over 600kg, more than one syringe will be required. The use of a scale or weigh tape is recommended to ensure accurate dosing.

Other important information

The safety of Equitape has not been studied following administration to mares during gestation and lactation, and as such should only be used in mares during pregnancy and lactation after assessment of the benefit/risk balance by your vet.

Every horse alive will have a small population of parasitic worms in its body, which cause the horse no ill-effects whatsoever; in fact, a small worm burden is an excellent ‘booster’ to a horse’s immune system and its ability to fight infection. However some horses develop heavy worm burdens which, if left untreated, can prove fatal. Domestication and the subsequent management of horses has increased the likelihood of heavy worm burdens developing, so it is vital that we, as horse owners, do all we can to keep our equine friends parasite free. Equine parasite control can be very confusing if you are unsure of which parasite you need to treat for, so we have put together some vital information to help you understand the goings on in your horse’s gut and how best to keep it under control....
