Situated on the border of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, approximately sixty miles north of London, Newmarket is considered by most as the home of Thoroughbred racing. The town is home to over 70 trainers, 60 stud farms and some 3000 horses. This long-standing relationship began over three centuries ago when Britain’s first race under rules was run in the town, during the reign of King Charles II. The Newmarket meetings were founded by King Charles or “Old Rowley” following his restoration to the throne in 1660. The first two Classic Races of the season the One and Two Thousand Guineas have been run over the world famous Rowley Mile course since 1814 and 1809 respectively. Later in the year the best horses in Europe are seen in Newmarket for Champions Day.
