Feedmark Gastric Comfort (Equine)

Gastric Comfort has been specifically formulated to provide nutritional support to maintain healthy mucosal lining and normal pH balance within the stomach.

Gastric Comfort contains ingredients that are gentle on the gut and soothe the stomach lining, particularly useful for horses on high concentrate diets, that are frequently stabled and those exposed to physical or mental stress. The addition of aluminium hydroxide adds a viscose gel into the gut, which greatly supports the delicate areas of the stomach.

The process of chewing stimulates secretion of saliva, which acts as a buffer on excess gastric acid secreted by the stomach. Forages, especially those high in Calcium (such as Alfalfa and other legumes) aid this, as fibre acts as a buffer in its own right, and by increasing saliva production during masticulation. Hence, horses on a low forage diet produce less saliva, leading to a lower stomach pH and a poor gastric environment, which can cause gastric issues. This product is particularly suitable for these horses.

Feed Gastric Comfort to:
  • support a healthy gastric environment

  • horses and ponies on high concentrate, low forage diet

  • horse with restricted turn out

  • horses showing signs of anxious, strained behaviour

  • horses showing sensitivity when being girthed and groomed

Gastric Comfort Contains:
  • Apple pectin: a soluble fibre, often used as a gelling agent, which maintains the delicate mucosal lining of the stomach

  • Aluminium hydroxide: forms a viscous gel which helps to line the stomach and encourages healthy stomach mucosa. Promotes a comfortable stomach

  • Calcium carbonate: to maintain a healthy level of acid within the stomach, soothing properties

  • Dicalcium phosphate: a source of calcium, an alkaline mineral

  • Glutamine :a non-essential amino acid which maintains health and function of epithelial cells in the mucosal wall

  • Liquorice root powder: to aid gastric health, helps to maintain normal levels of stomach acid production
  • Wheatfeed: a soluble fibre to maintain healthy stomach lining

To promote a healthy gastric environment:
  • Feed high forage, low concentrate diets

  • If extra energy is needed, feed fats and oils to provide slow release energy without over-loading the stomach

  • If feeding concentrates is unavoidable, split into as many meals a day as possible and mix generously with chaff to reduce rate of eating. It is recommended that you should feed no more than 1.5kg per meal - that’s less than one Stubbs scoop of cubes!

  • Alfalfa is a particularly good feedstuff due to high energy levels, quality protein and buffering abilities

  • Forage should be ideally be fed ad-lib, or at 5 hour intervals to maintain saliva production and prevent gastric emptying

  • Provide forage while travelling

  • Maximise turnout

  • Try to maintain a stress-free existence for your horse!

  • Specially formulated supplements, such as Gastric Comfort, can help to maintain optimal acid levels within the stomach, and keep your horse happy

  • The upper digestive tract:
The importance of maintaining optimal pH balance within the stomach has been well documented, promoting efficient utilisation of feed, and promoting general health.

Sustaining correct digestive pH starts within the mouth, as saliva production plays a highly important role in neutralising stomach acidity levels. On average an estimated 10-12 litres of saliva are produced daily, but there is much variation due to diet composition, as between 3 and 4 times as much chewing is required to masticate forage compared to the same amount of concentrate (Meyer et al. 1975), which in turn produces more saliva. The bicarbonate content of saliva acts as a buffer in the proximal portion of the stomach, increasing the pH, which permits microbial fermentation in the gut. Saliva also acts as a lubricant, and aids the passage of digesta down the oesophagus and into the stomach.

The horse’s stomach is very small in comparison to the rest of the gastrointestinal tract, comprising only 8% of the digestive system. The stomach is made up of 2 parts, the non-glandular and the glandular regions, which are separated by a division known as the Margo Plicatus. The non-glandular region is very susceptible to issues, as there is no barrier to offer protection against acid, which can splash around during exercise, especially when there is little digesta in the stomach. The wall of the glandular portion secretes hydrochloric acid, pepsins and gastrin (the hormone which stimulates gastric acid production) which produce a very acidic environment. In a healthy horse being fed a balanced diet, this acidity is naturally buffered by alkaline saliva, pectin and fibre, so pH rises to 6.5 by the time the digesta enters the caecum. If too little forage and too much concentrate feed is fed, this pH will be lower at the caecum, which will kill the essential microbes there, and release exo and endotoxins, which are absorbed into the blood stream.

The stomach continually secretes gastric acid, and when empty the stomach pH can become very low, but will rapidly rise following a meal. This emphasises the importance of feeding little and often to counter pH imbalances within the stomach.
