Why fleece garments keep you warm...
Fleece fabrics are used to provide lightweight, insulating mid layers and additionally hats and gloves to keep you warm.
Fleece fabrics are made from synthetic fibres. The construction of the fabric allows air to be trapped between the fibres and warmed by body heat to provide insulation for the user.
Water compromises the insulating properties of fleece
Although the individual fibres of fleece cannot absorb water, it is possible for water to become trapped in the spaces between the fibres. The accumulation of water reduces the insulating properties of fleece and also causes weight gain; fleece can hold up to 50% of its weight in water!
This reduces the comfort of the user causing them to feel wet and cold, but more importantly the reduction in insulation is dangerous and in severe cases can lead to hypothermia.
Fleece clothing is for active, outdoor people
Anyone who is active outside will benefit from wearing fleece. Either being used as a mid layer or an outer garment, the insulating properties of fleece will improve user comfort. So, if you are a mountaineer or dog walker or you work outside as a farmer or surveyor, insulating clothing will help to keep you warm.
Use Nikwax Polar Proof whe your fleece soaks up water
Your fleece garment could be soaking up water just because it is dirty. First, try cleaning it with Nikwax Tech Wash®, and if it is fairly new, or recently re-waterproofed, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) will be revitalised just from cleaning. But once the garment has been thoroughly worn, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Polar Proof®, after cleaning first with Nikwax Tech Wash®.
Use Nikwax Tech Wash when your waterproof clothing and equipment soaks up water...
Your waterproof clothing and equipment could be soaking up water because the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) has been compromised by dirt, or because it has been cleaned with a conventional laundry detergent. Dirt attracts water and household detergents leave water attracting (hydrophilic) residues, leading to fabric 'wetting out' in wet or damp conditions.
If your waterproof clothing or equipment is relatively new, or recently treated with a Nikwax waterproofer, then cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash® will not only remove contaminants, such as dirt and residues left behind by household detergents, but also revitalise DWR.
Make sure you clean with the right product
Conventional laundry detergents leave behind a water attractive (hydrophilic) residue which masks the Durable Water Repellency (DWR), causing fabrics to absorb water and ‘wet out’ in damp or wet conditions. Therefore, they need to be avoided when cleaning waterproof clothing and equipment.
Products that claim to clean and waterproof at the same time are generally not very effective cleaners and may seal in dirt.

Cleaning properly can be as important as waterproofing
Using the right cleaning product is as important as using the right waterproofing product. Conventional detergents leave behind a thin water-absorbent film on materials, which masks their water repellency. Therefore, always clean your waterproof garments with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Remember that dirt itself works against water repellency, so regular cleaning will enhance performance.

| Instructions for use | Using Nikwax Tech Wash in a washing machine: Use neat Tech Wash® and a sponge, or soft nylon brush, to treat stubborn stains before washing. Remove all non-washable parts. Shake well before use. Follow care label instructions. Do not use detergents. 1. Remove all detergent build up from the detergent dispenser. 2. Place item(s) in washing machine (maximum 2 items). 3. Use 150ml in medium/hard water* areas and 100ml in soft water areas for 1-2 items. 4. Wash according to care label. Applying Nikwax Tech Wash by hand: Use gloves. 1. Immerse item(s) in 6L hand-hot water in sink or bowl. 2. Use 150ml in medium/hard water* areas and 100ml in soft water areas for 1-2 items. 3. Rinse 3 times in clean water. * If your kettle furs up you have hard water. For extreme hard water use 200ml. Nikwax Tech Wash treated clothing doesn't need to be dried before you re-waterproof... If the item doesn’t require re-waterproofing, air dry or tumble dry on a low setting if care label allows. If you intend to re-waterproof the washed item there is no need to dry it first. Use Nikwax TX.Direct® for breathable clothing, Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof® for equipment, or Nikwax Cotton Proof™ for cotton, polycotton and canvas. Applying Nikwax Polar Proof in the washing machine: In the washing machine: For best results always clean item(s) first with Nikwax Tech Wash® in a separate wash cycle. No need to dry item(s) before waterproofing. Shake well before use. Follow care label instructions. 1. Remove all detergent build-up from the detergent dispenser. 2. Place clean items(s) in washing machine (maximum 3 items). 3. Use 50ml for 1 item and 100ml for 2-3 items. 4. Wash according to care label. Drip-dry or tumble dry on a low setting if care label allows. To maintain waterproofing always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use detergents. Application by hand: For best results always clean item(s) first with Nikwax Tech Wash®. No need to dry item(s) before waterproofing. Shake well before use. Follow care label instructions. 1.Use gloves, immerse clean garment(s) in 6L hand-hot water in sink or bowl. 2. Use 50ml for 1-2 item. 3. Agitate to mix, leave to soak for 5 minutes, then agitate thoroughly. 4. Rinse in cold water until water runs clear. Drip-dry or tumble dry on a low setting if care label allows. To maintain waterproofing always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use detergents. Nikwax Polar Proof treated clothing needs no heat to develop water repellency. Drip-dry or tumble dry on a low setting if care label allows. |
